Shopping and leisure facilities in Cumbria
Cumbria offers excellent shopping and leisure facilities with some of the biggest retailing names sitting alongside shops unique to the county.
The Lanes in Carlisle is Cumbria's largest shopping centre with major department stores and High Street names while down in Barrow, Portland Walk offers a similar mix. The new K-Village in Kendal has brought a range of 'outlet stores' to complement the town's Westmorland Centre. Most of the major supermarket chains are represented across the county.
Once the shopping is done there are plenty of opportunities to relax from hotel spas and leisure centres offering a wide range of activities through to every type of eatery and food choice; from feasting on home grown lamb, beef and venison, enjoying organic vegetarian dishes and sampling speciality cuisine representing every corner of the globe.
Portland Walk was initially to have a roof, but is now one of the North West's largest open-air shopping centres. It is currently the county's second largest shopping centre.
Portland Walk is situated in Barrow town centre, and links the principal shopping district (Dalton Road) to the Town Hall, Duke Street, and entertainment district (pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants on and around Duke and Cornwallis Streets). The bottom end of Portland Walk leads directly into Barrow Indoor Market, one of the areas largest markets.
Westmorland Shopping Centre can be found in the heart of Kendal being the town's main shopping location, linking the shopping areas of Stricklandgate and Market Place and being the only covered shopping centre in South Cumbria.
Windermere Marina is situated in Bowness-on-Windermere and has direct access to the lake itself, restaurants on-site and a bar.
It's that little bit easier to relax when you're able to look out on a view of the River Leven as it winds its way up to Lake Windermere.
Roanhead and Sandscale hawes situated just inside the Barrow town limits on the coast is a national trust nature reserve with some of the longest and cleanest sandy beaches in England. The beaches are enjoyed by all during the summer months.
The Park Leisure Centre provides a wide range of high quality sport and recreational opportunities for local residents and visitors to the Barrow area. Owned and operated by the local council the facilities are provided at the lowest prices possible making top quality gym, swim and sporting facilities accessible to all.
The Leisure centre is also on the site of the large town park which has a boating lake, and large recreational and grassed areas, which are broken up by beautiful gardens and trees.
