Cumbria and the Media

Cumbria features regularly on television, radio and in the pages of newspapers and magazines across the world. The beauty of the Lake District, Cumbria’s rich history and its inspiring people offer producers and reporters exciting and interesting material of broad interest to viewers and readers across the world.

Following from the success of the first series in 2010, ITV1’s The Lakes retuned in 2011 with presenter Rory McGrath throwing light on the lives of the characters that live and work in the Lake District. Cumbria regularly features on BBC series of Countryfile and Coast, as well as a host of history programmes. This has included the British Museum and the BBC’s A History of the World in 100 objects radio show, which featured a page from the West Cumberland News marking the opening of Calder Hall civil nuclear power station in 1956.

Within Cumbria there is a thriving and well-followed media industry, supported by Cumbria’s Digital & Creative sector. Cumbria’s largest media organisation is Cumbria Newspapers Limited, owning newspapers and local radio stations both inside and out of the county. The Westmorland Gazette dates back to 1818, when it was backed by William Wordsworth, edited by Thomas De Qunicey with a letters pages adorned by the likes of John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter.
