The M6 runs through Cumbria and along with major trunk roads make the north, north-east, and Scotland within a comfortable drive. Major east to west routes give easy access to the east coast ports and to Europe. London can be reached by the M6 and M1 motorways or by rail with direct trains from Carlisle, Penrith and Oxenholme (Kendal).

Airports at Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Teesside and Liverpool provide links to UK cities, Europe and destinations world-wide. Plans approved to develop Carlisle Lake District Airport offer great potential to make it even easier and quicker to import and export goods and for business people and visitors to travel to the county for work or pleasure. The county has an excellent system of couriers and freight transport companies.
